Rental Cottage Monitoring
Heat, leak and noise monitoring across vacation rentals without WiFi, on a plan that only runs when needed.
An owner runs five cottages on a popular lake, rented out year-round. Two recent incidents have shaped the setup: a guest left the heat off and pipes froze, and a heater failure last winter caused a pipe to burst inside an empty unit with five-figure damage. Noise complaints from neighbours during summer rentals are the other recurring problem.
None of the cottages have WiFi today, though the owner is planning to trial Starlink across the properties next summer for seasonal coverage. Every site has reliable cell service. Monitoring needs to work without WiFi today and pick it up later when Starlink lands; without changing the hardware. Winter is when monitoring matters most, when nobody's checking on the units between bookings.

The cottages
The owner runs five cottages on a popular lake, rented out year-round. The dashboard view serves two audiences; guest comfort during the rental, and the owner's peace of mind between bookings.
Two big incidents shaped this deployment. Two seasons back, a guest left a heat unit off after checking out; pipes froze overnight and the cleanup ate into the next booking. Last winter, a heater failed mid-week on a property that had no one checking in for ten days; pipes burst, water ran for hours, and the damage ran into five figures. Neighbours have also flagged noise complaints from past guests, the kind of thing that gets a property delisted on the major rental platforms.
None of the cottages have WiFi today; the owner is planning to trial Starlink across the properties next summer to give them seasonal WiFi. Every site has reliable cell service, so monitoring needs to run on cell now and pick up WiFi later when Starlink arrives, without changing hardware.

Choosing the kit
Five-and-five, identical setups, easy to maintain across the fleet. One hub and one leak sensor per cottage.

Five Leak Sensor Add-Ons get placed near the most vulnerable plumbing in each cottage; under sinks, near hot water tanks, in the basement utility area where a pipe burst would land first.

The plan
Monitoring is a winter concern today; the gear sleeps the rest of the year. That will change once Starlink lands.
For now, the plan is WiFi & Cellular, billed monthly. Monthly billing costs more per month than an annual term, but it lets the owner cancel for the summer when there's no risk to monitor and reactivate in October. At $17/mo/hub on the standard feature tier, the system is $85/mo while it's running, and $0 the rest of the year.
Every Canaro plan has two parts: a connectivity plan (how the hub stays online) and an account plan (what the dashboard can do).
Next summer the math shifts. Once Starlink is installed across the cottages, the owner plans to switch to the WiFi plan; which still includes up to 12hrs of cellular backup per month at no cost; on a 3-year term. That drops connectivity to $4/mo/hub, or $20/mo for the whole fleet to run year-round.

Setting alerts that matter
Every cottage runs the same alert set, set once on a template and pushed to all five hubs:
- Temperature warning; below 8°C (early notice, well above freeze)
- Temperature critical; below 4°C (call the local handyman now)
- Power loss; instant, in case the breaker trips or the heater dies
- Leak; instant, on any of the wet zones
- Noise; sustained level above the agreed threshold, for the courtesy-call to the guest before the neighbours call
Alerts route to the owner's phone, with the local cleaner / handyman copied for cottages that are unbooked between guests.

Daily life through winter
Through winter the dashboard runs in the background. A quick morning check confirms every cottage is reporting and temperatures are within range. Mid-winter cold snaps are the only time the owner pays close attention; if a unit drops to the warning threshold, a heads-up text gives plenty of time to investigate before it crosses critical.
Noise alerts during summer rentals (when monitoring is paused, it's not used; but during shoulder seasons when monitoring is still running) result in a quick text to the guest. Most complaints never get past that step.
A leak alert at any time gets the cleaner there within the hour.

Off-season
Come spring, the freeze risk is gone. The owner cancels the plan on the dashboard; devices stop reporting, but the hardware stays put in each cottage. In October, a single click reactivates each hub. The configuration carries over: thresholds, alerts, contact routing; nothing to set up again.
Six months of coverage, six months of nothing to pay for, and the gear is ready to wake up when the temperature drops back down.
